Has your favorite cap faced the sun of a hike or the long hours of an active day? Traces of perspiration, dust, or moisture... These signs of wear are inevitable. But that doesn't mean your cap has lost its shine. Regular cleaning restores its freshness and shine—and extends its lifespan. Here's our expert guide to gently caring for your cap.
⚠️ First things first: always check the care label inside your cap. Some older models may contain cardboard in the visor – a material that does not withstand water.
Cardboard or plastic: how to recognize the visor?
Most contemporary caps use a plastic insert. But vintage models—especially those from before the 1980s—often contain cardboard. To check, gently tap the visor: a hollow, dull sound may indicate the presence of cardboard. If in doubt, hand wash and avoid soaking.
The safest methods for washing a cap
Always use lukewarm water, a mild detergent, and avoid excessive heat. The idea? To preserve the shape, color, and unique character of the piece.
Hand wash
Ideal for all caps, especially delicate or antique models.
The gentlest – and most environmentally friendly – method remains hand washing. Perfect for hand-dyed fabrics or fine embroidery.
What you need:
- Mild detergent
- Clean basin or sink
- Soft brush (toothbrush type)
- Warm, clear water
Steps:
- Lightly dampen the cap or affected areas.
- Mix warm water and detergent. Dip the brush and gently scrub in circular motions.
- Rinse with clean water, pat dry with a towel, then let air dry – away from sunlight or any heat source.

Machine wash
Only for caps labeled “machine washable”.
Some modern caps can be machine washed – but be careful: never one with a cardboard peak or fragile seams.
Instructions :
- Delicate cycle at 30°C maximum
- Gentle spin
- Mild detergent, no bleaching agent
- Air dry only
Dishwasher safe
Original, but surprisingly effective for cardboard-free caps.
The dishwasher, thanks to its lack of spin, preserves the structure of the cap better than a conventional machine.
✅ Before you start:
- Max temperature 40°C
- Cycle without dirty dishes
- Heat drying function disabled
- Place the cap on a support (like a bowl) to maintain its shape
Instructions:
Run a delicate cycle, use bleach-free detergent, then let air dry.
Because a well-maintained accessory is an accessory that lasts.
At JJ Hat Center, every cap deserves to be treated like a statement piece – with care, craftsmanship, and elegance.
